Chapter Eleven
Zak couldn’t stop glancing out of the window during History class. Sam hadn’t shown up to Maths this morning. Where was he? Was he avoiding him again? Had he done something wrong?
He thought back to the previous evening when Sam had come over to his house. They had given each other blow jobs and Sam had fallen asleep in his arms. When he’d woken, Sam hadn’t given Zak any indication that he was angry with him. He’d been tired, telling Zak he’d been studying until late at night the last few evenings. Zak had scolded him affectionately, but had Sam taken his words to heart?
“Zak, are you listening?”
Zak jumped and turned to see Darren scowling at him from the front of the classroom. The History class had held even less of his attention than usual. He hadn’t opened his textbook or taken a single note of the lecture.
“Sorry,” he muttered.
“You need to be writing down the homework,” Darren prompted with a nod to the board behind him.
Zak dutifully started to scribble down the essay topic, even though his mind wasn’t on the task. The fates of people who had died hundreds of years before were of no concern to him, not when he was worried about Sam’s disappearance.
After the bell had gone, Zak approached Darren. “Where’s Sam?” he asked.
“I don’t know,” Darren replied. “Didn’t he come here with you and Lucy this morning?”
“Lucy’s car is in the garage. I had to get the bus, but Sam wasn’t at the bus stop with me.”
“Was he in class this morning?”
“If he had been, I’d hardly need to ask, would I?”
Darren gave him a hard look.
Zak waited impatiently until he realized he wasn’t going to get an answer to his question. “I know, I know, I need to lose the attitude.”
“You need to go to English.”
“It won’t hurt to miss one lesson. What if he’s ill?” As soon as the thought entered his head, Zak sensed it was the truth. Sam had been looking pale and drawn the last few days, even more so than usual. He’d had another nosebleed and dizzy spell as well, and maybe there had been more. Sam had clearly contracted some horrible Earth illness, and Zak needed to check he was okay before he did anything else.
“Even if he is unwell, you still need to go to class.”
“I’m not going to argue with you. I need to know where Sam is.”
Darren rolled his eyes. “Very well, have it your own way.”
Zak swung his rucksack over his shoulder and grinned, his decision made. “I’ll see you later.”
Darren didn’t bother to argue with him, not that Zak had any intention of listening. Sam was ill and Zak intended to make sure it wasn’t anything too serious. It wasn’t like he’d be able to concentrate on his lessons without knowing anyway.
He caught the bus and made his way over to Sam’s house, expecting to find him there, being fussed over by his mother.
The house appeared empty and when Zak rang the bell no one came to answer the door.
